Grey Cup odds headline champion weekend

It’s football championship weekend north of the border. On Saturday the CIS will crown their champs when Western takes on Laval in the Vanier Cup. A day later the CFL will decide their champion when Calgary faces Montreal in the Grey Cup.This year’s Vanier Cup is being played at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton. The early odds at PinnacleSports.com had Laval listed as a heavy 19.5-point favorite after they went through the entire regular season and the playoffs undefeated. Vanier Cup oddsThe Rouge-et-Or’s playoff run include a 32-7 drubbing of Montreal and a closer 27-17 victory over Concordia. Last weekend in the Uteck Bowl Laval routed Calgary 59-10 behind a three-touchdown performance from quarterback Benoit Groulx. Laval will be making their fifth Vanier Cup appearance on Saturday, and they’ve never lost the championship with a perfect 4-0 mark. A win on Saturday would also be the Rouge-et-Or’s fourth title in the last six years, as they captured the Cup previously in 2006, 2004, and 2003.The underdog Western Mustangs will be making their record 12th appearance in the Vanier Cup on Saturday, and their first since they lost to Calgary in 1995. Western’s last Vanier Cup win came a year earlier in 1994, and their overall record in the championship is 6-5. After posting a 7-1 mark in the regular season Western’s journey through the playoffs included a 36-28 win over Wilfred Laurier and a 31-17 victory against Ottawa. In last week’s Mitchell Bowl the Mustangs defeated Saint Mary’s after their defense stepped up and made a pair of game-changing interceptions in the first half. This is the first-ever official meeting between the Rouge-et-Or and the Mustangs, but they have met up twice before in the preseason. One of those preseason matchups took place this year in August when Laval won easily 37-9.Grey Cup oddsMeanwhile, the 96th Grey Cup is a home game for the Alouettes, who should have a majority of the loud fans in Olympic Stadium behind them. The last team that played for the Grey Cup at home was Edmonton in 2002, but the home field didn’t help them as they lost to Montreal. The Alouettes are also the last team to win a Grey Cup title at home, way back in 1977.That’s enough history though. This year’s Alouettes squad finished atop the East at 11-7 and toppled Edmonton 36-26 in last week’s East Final as a 5.5-point favorite. Anthony Calvillo passed for 295 yards with a touchdown in the win, while running back Avon Cobourne returned from an ankle injury and rushed for 52 yards and a TD on 16 carries.Calgary was a league-best 13-5 this season to finish first in the West. In the West Final the Stampeders got past the Lions 22-18 as a 5-point underdog. Henry Burris led the Stampeders to the win with a TD pass and a TD run. The Alouettes and Stampeders clashed twice during the regular season with Calgary winning both games. In Week 3 the Stamps clipped Montreal 23-19 as a 4.5-point road underdog. Burris threw for 302 yards with a touchdown to Ken-Yon Rambo, while Joffery Reynolds rushed for 82 yards and a TD on 14 carries. Calvillo passed for 341 yards for the Als, but he only found the end zone once.In the Week 12 rematch the Stampeders rolled over the Als 41-30 as a 3-point home favorite. Burris torched Montreal for five touchdowns passes, while Calvillo had an up-and-down game with two touchdown passes and three interceptions. Despite having home-field advantage the Alouettes aren’t favored in Sunday’s game, as the oddsmakers at PinnacleSports.com have the contest listed as a pick’em.
