Match Analysis

It seems like such a short time ago that Arsenal topped their Champions League group to qualify for the last 16. This was a good achievement for Arsenal, considering that they had the champions of Germany and Greece in their group, as well as the runners-up from the French league.

Arguably, the most interesting tie of the Champions League last 16 stage will see Serie A champions Milan and English giants Arsenal battle for the place in the quarter-finals.

Thierry Henry is not thinking of personal glory as he prepares to play his last game for the club against AC Milan on Wednesday.

Arsenal FC became the first English club to beat AC Milan in the San Siro after two stunning late goals from Fabregas and Adebayor in the last 16 of the competition in 2008.

The Italian champions sit at the top of the Serie A table, and Arsenal lie on fourth in the Premier League, unsurprising positions for both clubs. Normally but it’s a very different story in reality with Arsenal fighting for European football next year and Milan’s old-guard looking second best to Juventus.

The last time these sides met in the Champions League it ended up a 0-0 draw at the Emirates in the first leg, Arsenal went to the San Siro and recorded a 2-0 win after goals from Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor.

AC MILAN: Abbiati, Abate, Mexes, Thiago Silva, Mesbah Ambrosini, Van Bommel, Nocerino, Boateng, Ibrahimovic, Robinho

ARSENAL: Szczesny, Sagna, Vermaelen, Koscielny, Gibbs, Arteta, Song, Ramsey Oxlade-Chamberlain, Van Persie, Walcott

Match Verdict

Both sides were knocked out at this stage of the competition last season but that will change over the next three weeks, with Wednesday’s match sure to be significant in its outcome. The Gunners have hardly been in good form, but a spirited victory away on the weekend should put the wind in Arsenals sails. AC Milan will be no walkover; their wealth of attacking options will likely prove tough for a defence that is far from known for its ability to keep clean sheets. The Italians have been in a bit of a slump of late but an away win against Udinese at the weekend should soften the streak of poor form. I see Milan coming out of this game with maximum points.
